a NEWS photo Mike Wakefield WET FALL weather can make driving the Sea-to-Sky Highway a hazardous affair. As has happened in the past week, the route must sometimes be closed due to rock and mud slides. Start day with a full tank From page 38 Mike Benefield says the develop- ment of the new refueling system Tepresents a major mifestone in establishing natural gas as the preferred alternative to’ gasoline and diesel fuel. ‘‘With the FuelMaker appliance, compressed natural gas will now be available in areas where there is no existing network of public refueling sta- tions. Think of the convenience of being able to start out each morn- ing with a full tank of gas.”’ Benefield also points out how important a product like FuelMaker will be with today’s environmental concerns. The June 1989 issue of Check- point, a publication of the Southern California Gas Com- pany, reprinted the results from the California Air Resources Board about emissions from natu- ral gas vehicles: ‘‘The results showed that Natural Gas Vehicles emit lower levels of reactive hydrocarbons (an ozone precur- sor), carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides than methanol, ethanol or gasoline-powered vehi- cles.’" Many Canadian provinces are taking a serious look at ways of encouraging use of natural gas. Grants and other incentive pro- grams are being funded both by the provincial and federal gov- eecnments. One of the areas all are interested in is the use of alter- native fuels, with compressed nat- ural gas being at the top of the list. Be prepared for winter driving From page 36 The windshield may be clear of ice and snow, but dirt kicked up from passing cars can greatly reduce your visibility. * It’s important to flush and refill your radiator in the fall to protect’ against cooling system faiture during the winter. © A bag of sand is useful ro in- Cfease traction when snow or ice causes tires to lose their grip on the road. Keep a collapsible shovel in sour trunk to shovel the sand and dig you out of a tough spot. * For cars with rear wheel drive, it's a@ good idea to load up the trunk with a heavy object like au sand bag. The weight in the rear of the trunk can prevent ‘‘fishtail- ing’ in icy conditions. Be sure that the weight is firmly position- ed in the front section of the trunk. Taking these few simple precau- lionary steps can sate you and your family from a= harrowing winter driving experience.
