to honor mothers bezan early this
century.

Anna Jarvis -

founder of Mother's Day

In 1907, Philadelphian Anna Jarvis
mounted a campaign to have a single
day dedicated to mothers. Miss Jarvis
was inspired by her own late mother.
For the three years that followed, Jar-
vis worked hard at spreading her
idea. She wrote hundreds of letters to
congressmen, state governors, influen-
tial businessmen and clergymen.

By 1911, Morher’s Day observances
were occurring chroughout the
United States.

Once the custom was established in
the United States it was quickly
adopted in Canada, and gradually
spread all over the world. Today
Mother's Day is celebrated
everywhere from Australia, Mexico
and Japan to the West Indies, Europe
and Africa.
