Flicka gymnasts flip to tourney top spot NORTH VANCOUVER’S Flicka gymnastics team came out on top this weekend after defeating 13. top teams from across Canada and the U.S. to win the team award at the North Shore Invitational gymnastics meet. Held at Handsworth Second- ary School, the Flicka-hosted meet saw provincial and national women gymnasts ranging from ten to 16 years old vie for top honors. Closely following the 36.550 score of first place all-round winner Shannon Rogers of the Winnipeg Winnettes, Flicka’s Aparna Ray secured the second all-round slot with a score of 36.433. Marlies Ernst and Briony Lecky, both from Flicka, placed a respective fourth and sixth all- round with scores of 35.750 and 35.416 for the four events, Flicka also made an impressive showing in the individual events wsith Jessica Miallach winning first place in the beam final with an &,950. Hat tricks by Brad Costa and Scott Gordon spearheaded the Flames’ attack — Gordon not- ching a goal in each of the three periods and Costa, who had an eight-point night, scoring a natural hat trick with goals at 2:45, 2:26 and 8:21 of the third period. TWO GOALS A major penalty to Grandview one minute into the first period was pivotal in the Flames win as the Flames capitalized with two goals before the penalty expired. Kevin Buhr opened the scoring at 5:13 from Costa and Rick Rougeau and then, with only 22 seconds remaining in the Steeler major, Gordon combined with Dave Atkihson and Colin Cameron to put the Flames up 2-0. The Flames added two more in the period, Buhr scoring from Rob Tournier at 6:28 and then Dave Shepard scoring at the 14:33 mark. Grandview closed the gap to 4-2 before the period ended with power play goals at 16:29 and 19:34. GORDON SCORES Just 40 seconds into the middle frame, Gordon scored what proved to be the game winner. Rougeau added a shorthanded goal from Costa and Alexander at 11:12 to extend the local's lead to 6-2, but before the period ended, Grand- view scored on the power play to cut the Flames’ lead to 6-3. In the third period, Costa with his natura! hat trick, and Gordon also tallying for his hat trick, completed the Flames scoring in the game. The Steelers added their final goal late in the game fur the 10-4 final. The Flames outshot the Steelers 40-34 with Gary Knight in goa! for the home team. On Saturday, Feb. 3, the Flames host the Abbotsford Pilots at 9 p.m. at the Winter Club, in a game to be telecast by Shaw Cable. Thompson takes 2 NORTH SHORE swimmer Vaughn Thompson son two firsts ata team meet between B.C. and Southern California Jan. 19-20 at the Vancouver Aquatic Centre. A Chena Swim Club member, 14-year-old Thompson was the on- ly North Shore resident chosen to represent B.C. at the competition.
