4 - Friday, October 6, 1989 - North Shore News Developers told to scale down Lonsdale DEVELOPERS HOPING to build several residential snits in the Up- per Lonsdale area will first have to scale down their proposal before North Vancouver District Council gives the go-ahead to rezone the area, By SURJ RATTAN Contributing Writer Developers represented by Keer Wood Leidal Ltd. have asked the district to rezone the 4200 block of Prospect Road, known as the Barker property, in order that the company can build 16 residential units on the site. But at their regular Monday night council meeting, several district aldermen voiced objections to the proposai, citing increased traffic and high-density concerns. Ald. Craig Clark said he likes the idea of putting in new residen- tial units, but that 16 is too many. “The proposal is probably too dense a development,’’ Clark said. “Tt think the proposal is a little heavier than required. Currently there are 16 units proposed... I proposal | cannot support that, I think it should be a lesser amount.’’ Ald. Rick Buchols said while the Barker site needs to be developed, 16 units would be too many to house the property. He suggested rezoning the area from its present RS-1 designation to RS-2. Ald. Joan Gadsby said council should come up with a develop- ment plan for the Upper Lonsdale area. Clark said it is vital that council allow residential development to take place in Upper Lonsdale. **I am not going to vote in favor of this unless I am 100 per cent sure the result is a subdivision that the community can be proud of,”’ Clark said. Council voted to defer making a decision in the rezoning request until its staff prepares a report on whether the number of proposed units can be reduced by three. The report will also deal with a development plan for the Upper Lonsdale area and investigate the traffic impact from new housing in the area. FANRY'S WV summer school deemed a success OVER 700 North Vancouver stu- dents took advantage of North Vancouver School District 44°s summer program to bone up on various subjects this year. By MAUREEN CURTIS Contributing Writer “There was a tremendous in- creased enrolment and a waiting list to get in,’? summer school principal Barbara Burns said in her recent report to the District 44 school board. The district employed 49 teach- ers during the summer program, which operated out of Lonsdale Elementary and Lynn Valley Elementary, as well as at Argyle Secondary, which accommodaied over 400 students. A rapidly growing English as a Second Language program operated out of Ridgeway Elemen- tary School. Y \ciam HOLIDAY Other students were involved in a new secondary preparation pro- gram, a tutoring program at Argyle and a computer music enrichment course. According to Burns, much of the success of the summer school program was the result of an 18-1 pupil-teacher ratio that allows stu- dents to get extra attention. Jeff Ballou, summer — school vice-principal, also pointed to the lack of normal school distractions and the intensive format which in- volves three hours a day on one subject, as other reasons for the positive feedback from the pro- gram. Trustee Richard Waiton, who had administered summer school in his previous career as a teacher, commended Burns and Ballou on their accomplishments. “Summer school has come a long way and is obviously still im- proving every year,’’ said Walton, a eso OPEN oie m0 i SUNDAY 299 Noon TO 5 90 10% 10 499 HOLIDAY HOLIDAY HOLIDAY WEEKEND | WEEKEND | WEEKEND FIBER | CUSHION FILL HOLIDAY HCLIDAY WEEKEND | WEEKEND PRINTED JOGGING SCULPTURED NAILS & BATTING SELECTION So thin, and natural a looking they won‘t know $ 3 499 . if you don’t tell!
