George Thompson, who now raises Arabians and Paiominos in Langley, was formerly a West Van council member and resident for 37 years. He also owned and operated the award-winning Capilano Gardens restaurant (sold in 1966 to Frank Baker) which for a decade beginning in the mid- 1950s was the scene of many local wedding parties. And George always kept a picture of the bride and groom as they celebrated. Last Tuesday he handed over his unique collection of wedding photos — more than 100, each be- tween 23 and 33 years old — to West Van's chief librarian Jack Mounce as a donation to the West Van Historical Photograph Collec- tion housed in the Memorial Library Unfortunately, George didn’t keep the names of the newlyweds and at the moment nobody knows who’s who in most of the photos. **We would like to identify these happy couples,”’ says Jack Mounce, ‘‘and so we ask anyone who held their wedding reception at Capilano Gardens in the late °$0s or early '60s to please come in and identify thernseives.’’ The library will also make a copy of the photograph if a couple requests it. I hope they respond. For years to come thousands of people are now going to be enjoying those fascinating old pictures. While some may think it ridiculcus to scale down a residential development to eccommodate the birds — who may or may zot decide to use the nesting tree — it is exzctly this negative attitude that has led to the ca- vironmental! crisis currently facing the planet. For too long, western societies have adhered to a pro-development, pro-consumption ideology that has precluded any sensitivity to the natural setting or the The case of the eagle nesting site may be only one example in a multitude of other environmental con- cerns, but it is a significant one. It’s not often that the presence of a few birds results in the complete redesign and scaling down of a residential neighborhood. The victory of the eagle supporters is a sign that people have finally taken their biinkers uff and are waking up to the number of species becoming en- dangered as a direct result of our actions. Council’s agreemezt to respect the eagies’ nesting area is an indication that our local government is will- ing to recognize the legitimacy of environmentalists’ increasingly urgent concerns. While we ail have a long way to go in learning to protect, not exploit, our en- vironment, decisions such as this one are the first step thanks to a Valley THE STARS were actually out, most of the Malkin Bowl mos- quitos had taken the evening of f and the air was still balmy at 11 p.m. Wednesday when the final curtain fell on The King and | — the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic chosen as the Theatre Under The Stars opener for its month-long repertory season. Even with memories of Yul Brynner in the original London production, this non-professional critic found the TUTS performance totally en- joyable in terms of singing, acting, costumes and sets alike. Definitely recommended for at feast one of your summer evenings during the next three weeks — the alternating show from the 1989 TUTS talent stable being The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.
