16 — Wednesday, February 22, 1989 - Nerth Shore News FooD Prepare meals ahead and save money A FEW weeks ago, I mentioned that the way I shop to take advantage of the specials at my favorite supermarket is to buy enough for seven meals — use four and freeze three for next week. A reader happened to cali when Il was compiling my list for the coming week. She had the ad for her favorite market and challenged me to come budget beaters Barbara McCreadie up with a menu selection that would implement the pian. She picked the right time to ask — I was sitting with the same flyer preparing my own four and three oombination. Here is what I’d come up with: Meaday: Hamburger pic with cheese pastry (hamburger from previous week); potato pancakes, kernel corn, salad. Taresday: Chicken-vegetable soup (chicken breasts $2.49 special — Edgemont Village 3230 Connaught Cres. North Vancouver 987-7917 steam enough for Wed., use broth and bones for stock, asst. soup vegetables, 4 Ib./99¢). (Prepare enough soup for next week); dumplings, pizza bread (French bread on sale last week, alse Jack cheese) Wednesday: Chicken salad sand- wiches on whole wheat rolls, devilled eggs, carrot sticks (this is our curling-bridge night so we eat lightly) Thursday: Sirloin steaks ($2.98 Jb. — buy for next week); restuffed baked potatoes (bacon and cheese on sale last week); green salad and garlic bread (more of that last- week sale) Friday: Shepherd’s pie (leftover roast from fast week), broccoli with cheese sauce Saturday: Spaghetti and meat balls, green salad, garlic bread (both hamburger and bread from last week) Sunday: Roast leg of pork (special, $1.28 Ib. -- save enough for pork-fried rice for next week); stuffing, (all the leftover garlic bread!); mashed potatoes, gravy, mashed turnips (special); seasoned carrots (special), spinach salad. My three ‘‘hold-overs’’ for next week are the chicken soup, the roast pork and the chicken thighs (special, $1.69 Ib.). The thighs will become Teriyaki Chicken. On the assumption that the soup will mysteriously vanish, I’m buy- ing a double shot of steak! Around here, it pays to be flexible. eof wk to Eat!
