Britannia Beach celebrates copper discovery

THE B.C. Museunt of Mining in
the historic mining town of
Britannia Beach on Howe Sound
invites the public to celebrate
Discovery Day on Saturday, May
14, t0 matk the (00th anniversary
of the discovery of copper ore in
the nearby mountains.

The theme of the free day-long
festivitics will be a day-in-the-life
of an carly 20th’ century mining
town, and visitors will be invited to
explore the underground mining
displays, watch rescue drills-by the
volunteer fire department, inspect
home fife in a re-created miner’s
cabin, pan for gold and chat with

old-time Britannia drillers and
prospectors.

During the day visitors will be
welcome to partake of a hearty
miners’ breakfast, sip a pint of the
best at the beer garden, and enjoy
afternoon tea at the former mine
manager's residence.

nion for former residents and

workers of the mince, -a re-cnact-.

ment of the Copper Queen crawn-
ing, a mining film ‘festival in-
cluding historical footage from the
1920s and CBC News coverage of
the mine’s last day of operation in
1974. For entertainment, the sing-
ing duo Freshwater will be on the

Historic Sites and. Monuments

Board to declare the. ore concen-_

trating complex (the mill) at
Britannia Mines to be of national
historic and architectural
significance ~- the first designation
of its kind in Canada.

The multi-level mill, which
towers above the town, is a superb
example of industrial enginecring
and technology and is the last re-
maining gravity-fed concentrator
in North America that is accessible
to the general public.“

a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum is
located at Britannia Beach, 52 km
north of Vancouver on scenic
(1; km south of
Squamish), .

Thanks to B.C. Rail, the Royal
Hudson will be travelling to
Britannia Beach on May 14.
