NORTH SHORE TAB 3ird counters sought IF YOU feed wild birds in your garden, the Vancouver Natural History Society needs you to par- ticipate in the 87th annual one-day Audubon Christmas Bird Count. On Sunday, Dec. 20, feeder- watchers can participate by coun- ting the numbers and species of birds that visit their feeders and gardens that day only. The bird count began in New England as an alternative to hun- ting during the holidays and has spread across the continent. Or- nithologists use the results to determine any drastic changes in species population numbers, both locally and internationally. Depending on where they live, North Shore residents may spot between 10 and 20 bird species in their yards. Sonie birds like the dark-vyed junco are found throughout the North Shore, others like the red-breasted nuthatch may be found only near stands of old-growth Douglas fir. Those interested in participating can use a form that lists common garden birds found in winter on the North Shore. The list is available at the Lynn Canyon Ecology Centre, 3663 Park Rd. in North Vancouver. To get a list or for further information about the bird count, bird identification or types of ‘feed for different. bird species, contact Kevin Bell at the ecology centre, 987-5922. Anyone with knowledge of the location of an eagle’s nest can also help the ecology centre in its survey of the number of nesting pairs of eagles on the North Shore. All information about the nest location will be kept strictly. con- fidential.
