DECEMBER SHORTAGE
Red Cross needs donors

THE RED Cross is short of all
blood types and hospitals
throughout the province have been
advised to monitor their blood
reserves carefully.

“*We like to operate with at least
a five-day reserve on hand,"’ said
Red Cross spokesman Rich
O'Brien. ‘‘But at this tine of year,
it’s very difficult to maintain."

O’Brien said increased accidents
and poor clinic turnouts have
combined to create the problem.

“At the moment, the blood is
going out faster than it’s coming in
— and that’s a situation we can’t
afford to see happen for very long
at all.”’

There are 84 hospitals in British
Columbia and the Yukon that rely
totally on Red Cross donors.

“If more people only realized *

that, today, Red Cross is testing
their blood and then breaking it up
into its many components so a
single donation could be going to
affect the lives of at least four
people.’’

O’Brien said the red cells could
go to an open heart patient, the
