Sandy Sanderson West Vancouver NV resident defends dogs Dear Editor: Let me first qualify myself ~— 1 have had animals around me all my life, my husband was a well- known veterinarian whom 1 assisted for over 35 years, handling all breeds of dogs and cats. There are very, very few natural- ly vicious dogs of any breed. They are trained by man, from pup- pyhood to be vicious. A man buys a puppy and proceeds to train it to attack anything it comes in contact with, Do not confuse dogs trained by these unqualified people with the dog trained by experts for guard duty or policework. These dogs when not on duty are nearly always just household pets, no menace to anyone. Unfortunately, in the case of the dog trained by unqualified people ending up having to be destroyed, which I agree, there is no alter- native. As it is trained, so shall it remain. However, the real culprit goes free. I suggest that anyone training a-dog to be a killer should have a heavy fine of at least a few thousand dollars, or a jail term. Now, let me explain why children get bitten nine times out of 10. A parent walking a small child sees a dog coming, the child makes a motion towards it, the parent says ‘‘Don’t touch the dog — it bites,’ the child screams, frightening the dog, and the dog does bite. If these parents not wanting the child to touch the dog " just said, ‘Leave the dog alone, it doesn’t want to be bothered,” nothing would happen. Then there is the older child who gets bitten — does anyone ask why? I walk my dog every day, living near a school, meeting many children. I am happy to say 99 per cent ignore her, speak to her or pat her. However, there is the child who will walk up to her, kick at her, punch at her, or if there is a stick handy, hit her with it. So far she has ignored them, but should she retaliate, the hue and cry would be ‘‘vicious dog!’' Which one is vicious — the child or the dog? If that same child at- tacked another child, the other child would be perfectly justified in defending itscif. A dog does not have to be trained to protect its own, it will do that by instinct. My dog is a German Shepherd, and we have a small dog who goes with us for walks. Though my dog certain- ly is no fighter, she will defend the small dog if it is attacked by a large dog. With reference to Alderman Taylor’s suggestions (article in the Sun paper), that vicious dogs should have a large licence fee, just who does she suggest comply with this list? The smallest dog, Chihtahua to Great Dane, in the hands of the aforementioned idiots can be equally vicious. Good luck, Alderman Taylor, should this decision fall into your hands, | am sure you would just say, German Shepherds, Dober- man Pinschers, and Pit Bulls. How wrong you can be. There are over 110 different breeds of dogs. Olive Sleeth North Vancouver Get your vacation TAN right here! SU 1765 Marine West Van.
