Fashion —__ it WHEN THE _ temperature drops it is important to think about winterizing your hair. By RAYMOND Contributi Cold, windy days and indoor heating, on top of blow-drying and chemical treatments, can affect the health and appearance of your hair. It is time to consider preven- _ tative care in the form of proper conditioning treatments. For ex- ample, you can compensate for moisture joss with an intensive professional salon treatment using a deep-conditioning pack. The treatment, which lasts approx- imately 15 minutes, utilizes a balanced product — meaning that it provides a perfect balance of protein and moisture that is most beneficial to the hair. This type of treatment is also excellent as part of an on-going maintenance pro- gram throughout the year. As conditioners and other hair care products become more ad- vanced and fine-tuned to meet specific needs, it is a good idea to have your hair analysed by a pro- fessional stylist in order to know which products are best for your particular requirements. For example, lank hair may be the result of too much moisturiz- ing, which literally weights the hair down. Fine hair is especially susceptible to this problem. On the other hand, permed hair may need a moisturizing condi- tioner to compensate for any dry- ing effects of perming. Naturally curly hair often tends to dryness as well, and may require moisturiz- ing. Hair that has been colored may need a protein conditioning treat- ment since the coloring process can affect the protein chain. Hair that is both colored and permed benefits from the balanced moisture/protein deep condition- ing pack-type treatments. Pro- tein-depleted hair tends to be limp and lack bounce. For on-going winter care, a cream rinse should be considered since it keeps the cuticle closed and holds in moisture. This type of rinse may be used after each shampoo, depending on hair type. And speaking of shampoos, a change of season may also call for a change in the type of shampoo used. For example, hair often tends to be slightly more oily in lalr meeds winter, and a shampoo formulated for that condition may be re- quired. Brushing hair well also remains a hair care standby since brushing moves the oil from the scalp to the hair ends for added protection. When using conditioners it is also important to note that only a small amount of product is usually needed for effective results. This is particularly true of professional products which are generally more concentrated. Start by using very small amounts of conditioner, work into hair, and rinse well. The best time for conditioning treatment: now, right before the cold weather sets in.
