22 AND ALL GROWN-UP PICTURE JACK Webster down on his knees, telling very old (and bad) Scottish jokes. Who could induce the Master of Intimidation to resort to such measures? It was Ahson Arngrim, formerly Nasty Nelhe on television’s Little House on the Prairie series, during her visit to the BCTV noon hour news. Arngrim has grown into a 22-year-old comedienne and the Alison Arngrim Comedy Revue will be at Richard’s on Richard’s Monday and Tuesday nights, Aug. 13 and 14at8p.m. From spoiled brat to stand-up comic was a Nnatu- ral transition, Arngrim says. Although she enjoyed her role in the Little House LINDA CALDWELL series, she says she was glad to see the end of it because she was bored and tured of being stereotyped. Her life as a comic all started seven years ago when the slightly obnoxious Ar- ngrim started heckling a new comedian her parents had taken her to see. The exas- perated comic finally told her that if she thought his job was so easy, she should try it herself. Two days later, she did. Armed with material she had written herself, she returned to the club and went onstage. ‘*At first 1 was really ter- rified,’’ she remembers. “‘But then I got out there and the first laugh came and 1 relaxed and it all turned out terrific. ‘*l realized this was a great way for people to see me in- stead of Nellie,’’ she added. Arngrim has been called everything from a junior Joan Rivers to a female Bob Hope. She was recently featured in an edition of People magazine which was devoted to comedy. ‘*‘Now | feel like I’m of- ficially accepted as a stand- up comic,’’ she says. Although she says she is most comfortable doing comedy, she has not limited the use of her talents. She starred in a Canadian stage production of In One Bed and Out the Other, and she starred with Marie Osmond in the television feature | Married Wyatt Earp. She also appeared onstage as the female lead in Butterflies Are Free. Arngrim is the only American in a family of Ca- nadians, although the family home now is in California. Her mother, Norma Mac- millan, was born in Van- couver. She has acted in commercials and done hun- dreds of cartoon voices, in- cluding that of Casper the Friendly Ghost and Gumby. Arngrim’s father, Thor Arngrim, was born in Saskatchewan. He has been a director and an actor in addition to producing films for ABC television and the National Film Board of Canada. Brother Stefan started ac- ting at the age of six and has a long list of television and movie credits to his name. After Arngrim’s initial appearance as a comic at age 15, she relied on professional writers for most of her mate- rial. Now she writes about 60 per cent of her own mate- rial. ‘I get ideas from people and play off people in the audience,’” Arngrim says. ‘‘It gets really interesting that way.”’ Opening the show will be DeLeon Workman, a black comedian who promises to dispel three black myths. Master of ceremonies Andre Morriseau performs as a candidate for prime minister and Arngrim will confide three essential things to know before going on a date. The band Ice, also from Los Angeles, will be providing the music after 10 p.m. Arngrim will be on the Don Harron show in the near future, and says she ts trying to persuade Jack Webster to feature her as a guest. She hopes to get in some relaxation while she is here, look forward to seeing you.at the.
