Pump grease into cleaned nipples Story and Photos by Elisworth Dickson Learning to maintain your car and handling its minor repairs is a favour you can do for yourself. There are a aumber of benefits, namely, you save a good deal of mechanic's fees, you greatly extend the life of your car, you learn about auto- mobiles, and lastly, it’s satisfying. ; Before you do anything to your car, you obviously need tools. You don’t need to spend a fortune on a complete set of machanic’s tools which can run into megabucks. This is what you need to work on your car. First determine if your car is built in inches or is metric. - one set of '‘4” drive socket wrenches - One set of %" to %” open end/box end wrenches - ome set of screwdrivers, various sizes and type of blade - one adjustable (crescent) wrench - a couple pairs of pliers, including needle-nose - one pai of “Channel-lock” phers - one pair of “Vise-Grips” (use very sparingly. they butcher your nuts) - one oil filter “wrench” or make your own - one grease gun To work under your car, you need to hold it up safely. Never, never trust your car jack to keep the car up when you are beneath it. There are several ways to get under the car if you don't happen to have a hoist in your drive- way. One way is to jack up the vehicle with your car jack, then place “jack Stands” under the frame, then take the car jack off. Jack stands are under $20 a pair. You can buy small steel ramps for under $50 per pair. Or if you really want to save money, drive two whecls up on your sidewalk. Also it is a good idea to chock the wheels for added safety. This can be done with a bit of scrap 4"x4” or a suitable rock. The first step in an oil change is to drain the oil by removing the oil plug on the crank case with a box end wrench and draining the oil into a plastic or metal bucket. Among _ other Places, you can take your old oil to the Mohawk station at Third and Forbes and they will give you gas coupons. Or you can put it on your dusty driveway or save it to kill weeds. Don't pour it down the sewer. Some cars have grease nipples and some don't. If you car does, wipe the dirt off the nipples. How can you find them all? Generally, they are located on the moving parts of the suspension and steering, especially where two rods meet at a “joint.” Attach your grease gun hose to the nipples and pump in the grease. You will see a small amount of water get squeezed out of the joints. Keep pumping until you see grease come out, or if you can't see any grease come out, a reasonable length of time. If the car is on jack stands and the wheels hanging free, it will be easier to get the grease in. Also, you can turn the wheels for easier access to the grease nipples. Next, taking your oil filter wrench, remove the oil filter. 'm assuming you have bought a new one. Be careful not to get too close when the filter comes off, or you will receive an unwel- come shower of dirty oil. While the oil is draining, other little jobs under the car can be accomplished such as checking the oil level in the diffcrential (rear end). This is very casy. On the back or side of the rear end is an oil plug. Remove it and stick your little finger into CONTINUED ON PAGE Al}
