‘IT'S THEIR FAULT’ Trudeau and Bennett both Wc PIERRE TRUDEAU, Bill Bennett, union leaders and Easterners all came in for heavy criticism when the Western Canada Concept brought its separatist message to the North Shore Wednesday night. Doug Christie, founder of the Western Canada Con- cept (WCC), and Brian Westwood, a new WCC convert who used to lead the provincial Progressive Conservatives, delighted a fnendly crowd of about 100 people with their vision of a healthy, independent and free enterprise Western Canada. The meeting was held at St. John’s Anglican Church Hall in North Vancouver, and was one of several the WCC has held across the province in recent weeks. The message from Westwood and Christie was plain: Trudeau's federal Liberals and _ Bennett's provincial Social Credit are leading the West down the road of economic ruin, and spend all their time blaming each other for the mess instead of doing something about it. “They (Trudeau and Bennett) are nght about one thing.” Westwood said. “It is their fault, both of them.” Westwood and Chnistie recited a long list of grievances they said the West has against central Canada, including Metrication, bilingualism, lack of representation, overtaxahion, unfair tanffs, and handouts to eastern provinces in the form of equalization grants totalling $4 billion a year But the present provincial government is no better, they said. because it sup- ports the Liberal policies Westwood complained about the “total Mismanagement and total neglect by the federal Liberals and the hybrid Liberals in bia Christie said the WCC is the only party that stresses Brush Colum the positive, and the nghts of the individual voter It as, he said. 8 party where “we give to others whats bestin oumelves — The main plank sm the Western Canada Concept ts 100 copies $ 00 + TAK and a com plete money saving tine of copying serve ces Concord Copy 101-1615 Pemberton 985-5115 targets accountability, he said. The people should have the right to recall the members of the legislature, and the right to decide issues — including western separatism itself — by referendum. Eastern Canada (meaning Ontario and Quebec) is stealing the resources of the West, Christie charged. “Why is it that always a Western resource becomes Canada’s resource, while a Quebec resource stays as a Quebec resource?” Throughout Canada’s history, Western Canada has been forced to support the East, which has the most seats in the House of Commons, Only with separation and free trade will the West achieve economic prosperity, Christie said. Though most of Christie’s wrath was reserved for the Socreds and the Liberals (the Soviet Union is the only other country where one party has ruled for so long as in Canada, he said), he also attacked union leaders, though not their members. “The attitude of throwing rocks at unions is fine — up to a point,” but John Fryer, general secretary of the British Columbia Govern- ment Employees Union, and other union leaders are dictators, Christie said. Most of the audience loved Christie’s speech, often interrupting him with loud and long applause and cagerly responding to the appeal for donations at the end of the meeting. A provincial election was much on the minds of Westwood, Christie and the audicnce. Westwood predicted the WCC could win any upcoming election, and Christic was cqually optimistic. He denied that the WCC would split the Social Credit vote in the election, allowing the New Democratic Party to squeak in. “We're not SEPARATION dy?
