Canada is $20 billion in hock, B.C. is $1 billion
overdrawn and Pierre Trudeau is going to stay to
fix the economy just like he fixed everything else.

I guess it's the end.

1 used to worry about the
collapse of Canadian society
in the same way that I
worried about the collapse
of Western civilization.

Arnold Toynbee, the
historian, used the word
“arrested” to describe
societies such as those of the
Spartans, Osmanlis,
Polynesians and Eskimos,
which at a certain point
ceased to grow and develop.

He attributes their break-
downs to several factors,
including loss of command
over the physical and human
environment and schisms in
the body politic, all of which
apply, with knobs on, to
Canada at the moment.

And of course not just
Canada but America and
Europe and Africa and
South America and_ the
U.S.S.R. and the Middle
East.... At least we all seem
to be losing our grip at the
same time.

It seems fairly clear that
the American Empire is
being bumped just as Europe
was bumped by its former
colonists.

It is Asia’s turn to be ON
THE RISE.

Some of you might be
inclined at this poimt to cry
over spilled destiny and say.
“Darn those lucky Asians!
Poor us!”

But, listen, you wouldn't
have wanted to be in charge
during the next century. And
besides, being No. 1 is n-
variably a disaster for the
citizenry.

The whole busmess of
bringing an empire on
stream is a ghastly under-
taking, fit only for low-level
power-trippers.

During the period while a
vigorous new nation is
hacking its way to the top,
the folks at home don’t have
all that much disposable
income.

On top of that, they have
to wear crewcuts, do
calisthenics (look at Japan),
display patriotic en i .
and as often as not, send
their sons overseas to be
assaulted by angry natives.

It’s a brutalizing process,
very expensive and cnergy-
