By CHRIS LLOYD Sunday afternoon on the North Shore was transformed into a chaos of crashing trees and power blackouts as the area was hit by a storm which wrought widespread havoc. For two hours fire departments and municipal engineering departments dashed from one emergency to another, clearing roads and power lines of fallen trees, helping at homes which had also been struck by trees, clearing flooded areas and answering false fire alarms set off by power failures caused by the storm. Lynn Valley was an area which suffered particularly heavy damage, accounting for 12 of the 23 calls made to North Vancouver District Fire Department as a result of trees being blown down. District engineering and fire crews joined forces to help cope with the damage inflicted by the storm between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. A hemlock tree about 74 ft. long crashed through the roof of a house at 1399 Lynn Valley Road. The occupants of the house were away at the time and in spite of the severity of damage caused by the storm nobody was injured by any of the in- cidents on the North Shore. Firemen covered the hole in the roof with a tarp. Trees toppled on to eight homes in the District but the one on Lynn Valley Road was the only’ house damaged. Trees landing on hydro lines caused transformer fires at 3676 Princess and at the corner of Capilano Road and Fintry. The fire department answered four calls con- cerning trees that had fallen in the Capilano area. RCMP helped direct traffic past a precarious situation in the 3400 block Mount Seymour Parkway where a tree brought down hydro lines leading to a home, within just a few feet of the road.
