Check over these four charts. Ask yourself whether they shouldn’t be major election issues. Then read below and see how you can help make thém issues. , . (Some quotes t to refresh h your memory.) 1975 Prime Minister Trudeau: “Tomorrow, the Government of Can- ada will ask Parliament for the author- ity to impose severe restraints upon rising prices and income." And the Auditor General said “*. . . the present state of. financial man- agement and control ‘systems of departments and agencies of the Government of Canada is significantly below acceptable standards. ..”’ From 1962-1975, the size of the civil service increased from 132,000 to. 259,000." 1976 Prime Minister Trudeau: ‘“‘We haven't been able to make even a modified free market system work in Canada to prevent the kinds of prob- lems we are now experiencing.” The Auditor General: “lt am deeply concerned that Par- liament — and indeed the Govern- ment — has lost or is close to losing control of the public purse.” From October 1970 to October 1976, inflation was 55.3 per cent. Money supply grew by just over 100 per cent. The economy in the same period grew by 31.7 per cent. - 1977 Trudeau sald Canadians needed to show some economic self- restraint: ‘'.. . if they don’t discipline themselves, we will discipline them.” 1978 One million unemployed. The Auditor General: “There is, in my - opinion, wides- ‘pread lack of due regard for economy and efficiency in operations of the Government.” . 1979 From The Royal Commission on Financial Management = and Accountability: “We have reached the deeply held conviction that the serious malaise pervading the management of government stems fundamentally from a grave weakening, and in some cases an almost total breakdown, in the chain of accountability, first within government, and second in the ac-’ countability of government to Par- liament and ultimately to the Can- adian people.” . Effective planning with respect to the use of total resources was wholly inadequate.” Prime Minister Trudeau has set up a civil service committee to study the Royal Commission Report. This, ac- cording to the present Auditor Gener- al, is like “asking a committee of toxes to develop a security system for a henhouse." The 3 major parties will spend millions on advertising in this election. Very little of it will go towards bringing up what you've just read. The Citizens’ Coalition wants to do something about that. We have already gathered an amount from our 30,000 members that will pay for one advertisement, nationally. We would tke to do much more. If, after reading all this, you believe these issues should be put to Canadians coast to coast — and pressure brought to bear so that newly elected politicians will begin discussing them — we'd like a donation. $10 would be fine. $100 would be even better. $100.now might help save you considerably more in the coming four years. If we again don't bPing up these issues, the politicans won't. And we believe this election is too important to leave to the politicians. Help.
