Fast ferries slowed Fram pane 9 process. not at the end. It's indicative of so many levels of mis- Management within the NDP. Ferry CURE commissiened their own report nearly a year ago on the effect of wake and wash on the island's shores. “Our report said essentially the same thing.” said Goth. “It speaks of extraordinary erosion happening to the!> tront lawns and such which come down to the water. These are lawns that have been in place tor 20 or 30 vears and only just now are start- ing to erode, since the (fast ferries) started to run.” Mike Carter, executive vice president of operations and cus- tomer services at BC Ferries, said the report’s recommendations will case the effect of wake and wash on islands and other ves- sels. “It’s a fairly low wave, bur it carries its energy a lot further out,” said Carter. “It’s four to 15 times fess than an average winter wave but it’s higher than waves that occur in summer normally.” Wake and wash problems have long plagued the three PacifiCats. BC Ferries was forced to alter the speed of the vessels only a few weeks after their maiden voyages. Carter said the ferry corporation had received complaints from residents of Passage Island, Gabriola Island and the lower half of Bowen Island regarding wake and wash. Full speed over open water for the PacifiCat terries is 34 know. Regular ferries run at a maximum speed of 20 knots. “Once you reduce their speed to below 25 knots they put out the same wash as a conventional ferry,” said Carter. “And we've been doing that. They’ve been operating at full speed across the open water in the middle, but then they’ve been pulling back to less than 25 knots once they come near Howe Sound. “I'm confident that the way we're running now will rake care of everything.” However, with the three vessels nuw on the auctics: block, the changes to routes and speed may be a moot point, admitted Carter, PricewaterhouseCoopers is currently overseeing the sale of the three vessels. municioal affairs THE following are brief summaries of topics on the agendas of North Shore municipalities and school boards: North Vancouver District Council: Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. .— proclamations: Pedestrian.
