THE Canadian Conncil of G Distributors (CCGD) and the Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) are launching a project to develop a Canadian standard for the voluntary labelling of foods derived from biotechnolegy. The CGSB, an aceredi standards development organi- zation within Public Works and overnment Services Canada, will manage the development of the standard on behalfof the CCGD. Initial studies, including a National Institute of Nutrigon study on voluntary labelling in Apel 1999 indicated that con- sumers view labelling as impor- tant, but not as a panacea solu- tion, The study aiso iustrat the need for greater public understanding of this issue. Under the Food and Drugs Act mandatory labelling must oceur for all foods, inc those derived from biotechnol- ogy, when nutritional changes are made to the product, or to alert consumers of possible health concerns such as the presence of food allergens.
