They are upset that the municipality has not consult- ed with them or che matter. “As a club, our main con- cern is not just for us,” said Findlay. “We’re also con- cerned for the youth soccer. It’s really importans for pco- ple to understand that this (Ambleside) facility is used to the max every week, every day.” Findlay and Lennox said that without the Ambleside field, there would be nowhere to hold practices. Both men say there would be nowhere else to play catch-up games when wet weather chases teams from the grass fields. “Right now we don’t have another place to practice in West = Vancouver,” said Findlay. “This facility is running at the top end of usage. Without it, West Vancouver soccer would be ina terrible state.” According to Lennox, youth soccer is growing at a rapid rate and field space is at a premium. He anticipates that his youth programs will prow trom their Present size of 1,781 participants to over 1900 next year alone. The senior and youth pro- grams are supported by vol- unteers and — fundraising efforts. The municipality does not charge for use of the fields. Uleimately, Lennox and Findlay want some assurances from municipa! politicians that they won’t be left homeless. “This is not an anti-arts stance,” said Findlay. “I per- sonally am a big believer in the arts and I do sympathize with their lack of a proper facility. Bur the reality is that I don’t believe it to be cor- rect to punish one group for the betterment of another. And that’s exactly whar they {council) are doing.” Meanwhile, councillors Victor Durman and Liz Byrd are working to kecp tempers calm.
