Dress the models in drop-dead glamor gowns and acces- sorize to the hilt. Let them loose and what do you have? The makings of a high-powered fashion shoot and an invaluable learning experience tor North Shore youth. The fashion shoot was a special assignment for students from six North Shore schools who participated in a photography workshop this spring. A sclection of their best work is pictured here. The career enrichment program was offered through Artist Jamie Ward Sutherland For Kids (AFK) in conjunction with the North Vancouver School District. This was the fourth year for the project, the third in part- nership with the North Shore News. The partnership is critical to the success of the project, sav Bill MacDonald, managing director cf AFK, which raises funds and administers visual arts programs for elementary and scc- ondary school students on the North Shore. Knowing that the best of their work will make it into print encourages competition and establishes a high level of protes- sionalism among students, says MacDonald. “Irs set out from Day ] that there’s an expectation (for the students) to perform,” he says. “The kids are working with pro- Ashiee Muirhead Sutherland fessionals, gaining first-hand experience with the masters. The assignment is real. The deadlines are firm.” Photographer brothers Dave and Mark Montizambert pro- vided the students with 32 Rours of technical instruction. Hair stylist Jon Paul Helt, owner of Avant Garde salon in Yaletown and a North Van resident, provided the inspiration for the shoot. Recipient of numerous honors, including a lifetime achieve- ment award, Holt is recognized at home and abroad. for his mind-bending hair creations.
