34 — Wednesday, September 10, 1997 — North Shore News NV schooi spots require juggling By Martin Milterchip Contributing Writer miller@nsnews.com THERE is daylight at the end of Peter Humphries’ annual end-of-summer tun- nel. Humphries is student place- ment officer for North Vancouver School District 44. Every year he copes with the registered but unplaced stu- dents in the district. “We had a wait list begin- g in June that by Sept. 1 umbered 105,” said Humphries. . Hamphries explained that final placement occurs after the first day of the new school year and schools have been able to do the traditional head count to determine their actual, ver- sus predicted, numbers. “Last night .we placed approximately 103 and we are stil trying to place the last two . or three,” said Humphries, last Wednesday. ~” ‘Despite the placements Humphries acknowledged that not everybody is happy with the solution. - . » -. About 50% of the wait-list- ed students will not be attend- 3 SA 7 A Whol ~ To Get Portraits - Your Way! . OS 2 ing school in their immediate neighborhood. Board policy adopted last year says that children moving into an area in the summer months will be allocated space in the neighborhood school providing it has room. If not, relocation occurs with the child being listed for the first avail- able opening back in the local school. Humphries says some fari- lies don’t move their children a second time. “They can stay if they choose in order to avoid disruption in the children’s lives.” The problems have been almost exclusively at the ele- mentary level this year with the space crunch being felt most acutely in the east of the dis- trict. Plymouth, Cove Cliff, Sherwood Park and Dorothy Lynas elementary schools are all full, with Sherwood Park having been allocated another teacher in order to handle wait- listed students. Ross Road has a full com- plement of French immersion students, while Upper Lynn and Capilano don’t have space to expand. RE Le PORTRAIT CHRISTMAS. CARDS. j EARLY BIRD SPECIAL .
