tober 13, 1996 -- North Shore News heed n tactics Dear Editor: On behalf of the vast majority of North Vancouver District citizens, | would like to personally apologize to our mayor and council members for the abuse that they have had to endure over the two nights of the Cates Landing public hearings. The bounds of democratic debate were crossed by that vocal few who showed complete lack of respect for our elected officials and felt compelled to use threats to impose their point of view upon others. Attempts at intimidation should play no part in our decision-making process. This behavior cannot be tolerated in a truly democratic society. I would like to remind everyone that this is the same council ‘that News reader down on Dave approved the preservation of the Cave and Mountain Forest areas as park, that designated much of Northlands as golf course, and that significantly reduced the development areas within ‘Lynn Valley, “AML of these decisions required amendments to the | Official Community Plan and drastically reduced both the amount of land available for residential development and the amount of cash available from land sales to serve the needs of the dis- trict. How quickly people forget! While these issues may have been considered momentous, the same compelling reasons cannot be said to apply to the Cates Landing site. This is not the Garden of Eden. The reality is that we are dealing with a small, polluted industrial site that has been the target of numerous cam. plaints from its neighburs for years, in the middle of a residential district hav- ing a pristine park as its focus, To replace this industrial eyesore, we are being offered an exnanded park area, public access to the water, con- nection to Cates Park, a marina and alternative housing choices, The alternative of continued indus- trial use, with the possibility of greater noise, traffic and dust, is surely unac- ceptable. A totally residential neighborhood is the only logical choice. Faced with what appears to be a rel- atively simple decision thar will be of great benefit to North Vancouver District citizens, why then is there any hesitation? A hunter in the fight for freed Is it because of a smail but highly yocal group who believe that any and all change has to be considered bad, unless, of course, it takes place else- where? Could it be because of a small minority of people who feel that their opinions are the only acceptable ones despite the denial of benefits to the majority of the population? The developer may not be able to lay claim to the silent (or less votubley majority, but then neither can its opponents. I strongly urge council to be gov- erned by the rules of reasun, not by bombast and intimidation. Please demonstrate that true democracy is alive and well in North Vancouver District. Tan Turner North Vancouver am Dear Editor: We suffered through four-plus years of Mr. (David) Schreck and_ his “attitude” while being an MLA for North Vancouver- Lonsdale. Let's hope the North Vancouver District voters won’t repeat the mis- take and elect Mr. Schreck to council. .G, Parton North Vancouver Dear Editer: Grin And “Bear” It. Few things scare me more than Canada’s deadly carnivores — except Canada’s collection of over-industrious shrill female zealots, who attach themselves to wacky causes (Doug Collins Column Unfair To Bears Oct, 2 News). I have never had bush scares from other than equally scared Dingoes or deadly poiso- nous snakes. However, unlike bear nor wishes to do so, I would have no compunction if one of these savage beasts came within a buil’s roar of me. As for my own “liking of being hunted, to be killed for... another species’ pleasure...,” I would hope: I could face a charging bear, even while [ held a loaded rifle, as courageously as did Military Medal winner Doug Collins, when bullets from his same species killed and him 56 years ago at Dunkirk, France. In his 10 escapes from Nazi captivity, he too, was hunted. Now using his “pen,” (much mightier than _ his “sword”) Doug, still fights for the freedoms enjoyed by Tara Carter, while opposing the many strident “voices” clamor- ing to bring down those free- doms. ; Russell C. Shelton West Vancouver shear the B.C. sheep Dear Editor: Now that the sheep have been put in the pen, it’s time for Clarke, Petter, Zirnhelt and company (after mismanaging gov- ernment funds fora num- ber of years) to raise some more cash (road tolls, casinos, photo radar). As our trusty Mr. Zirnhelt stated, “The gov- ernment can do anytning it wants.” It can remove funds from the Forestry Renewal and maybe if the sheep are not good, we will remove another $400 million next year. Balancing the budget this way is really easy, isn’t it?
