One spoke in modified tones, avoiding drawing attention to one's self. And one improved the shining hour with embroidery, usually on items that might be construed as part of one’s hope-chest. One of the mothers in our neigh- bourhood gave regular time to an hour of instruction in needle-work to half a dozen of us teenagers. | attended, of course, carrying my pil- low-slip and embroidery silks for reproduction of lazy-daisies, after the design had been ironed on to the white cotton. Alas, my lazy-daisies were too lazy for words — my french knots unravelled, my roses wilted even as { stitched, It just wasn’t my bag. The lady in charge reluctantly conceded that it was a waste of time, hers and mine. Maturity changed nothing. At Normal School, where the Home Economics course required presentation of a finished garment before graduation was conceded, I persuaded my landlady to run up on her sewing-machine the most basic pair of underpants you ever saw. The ploy earned me nothing ~ my teacher saw through me, she knew I hadn’t the least idea how to even treadle, Instead she made a deal with me — if I'd write an essay about what !'d got out of Home Economics, she'd pass me. That's what the ladies of the North Shore Needle Arts Guild have been doing for years, and now they've done this very spe- cial thing, plotted it, designed it. given hours of time to perfecting it. The result is a most delightful and amusing and affectionate salute to where we all live. They call it North Shore Reflections, and the fin- ished work will be revealed at Lucas Centre from June 16-18. It’s really stunning, three tall pan- els crammed with evidence of their needle skills, combined with a sense of humour. The work embraced five years and the spectacular talents of 90 volunteers, who undertook to translate Lucilte Little's sketched concepts into a tapestry celebrating our North Shore. Ruth Warren was chair when inspiration struck ind rejoices in the outcome. This group is, incidentally, the only Canadian chapter of the Embroiders Guild of America (they're proud of that), When you go to see the panels at their unveiling you will also see 600 other pieces of needlework from the hands of the 250 women who make up this sisterhood.
