36 - Wednesday, July 20, 1994 - North Shore News Barney Bentall’s From page 25 Boneyard made sense.” The new studio could prove to he a boon for Nairne and the rest of the band because it will elimi- nate many of the obstacles that hinder producing an album they will be happy with. “Barney and | and Gary Fraser produced our last record (Ain‘t Life Strange). While everybody in the band was pretty involved in it, the three of us were the actual producers of the record. There was an awful lot of work. That record was recorded virtually everywhere. We recorded for a «»~ Month up on Keats Island.” * — They actually put a whole 24- track recording studio in a cottage on the island. “We recorded various people... in Toronto. We recorded here in town -—- Mushroom Studios, Vancouver Studios. We took all of this stuff — some at Little Mountain Sound —- from all over the place and we mixed the whole record down in Los Angeles.” But Nairne says that with Boneyard set up and ready to go, BBLH will have more room to maneuver, and therefore more artistic license, to prepare for their upcoming album. “With this new record, the recording process has yet to begin. We've started all of the writing; a lot of the writing is done and there’s still more writing going on as we speak. “When we come in here (Boneyard), as a band we go through the arrangements of the songs. We listen to them, we can record them, we can listen to them for a week or two weeks. We come back and someone might come up with a brilliant idea... and we have the ability to say, ‘O.K., let’s do it again.’ “You're not confined to going into another studio, paying a lot of money and saying ‘Well, we’ve got to like it because we've just spent $2,500 on it.’ (Now) if we lon’t like it, we just do it again. That's the great beauty of how we set this place up.” During the band’s down time, Nairne offers his time mixing, engineering and producing records for local bands who are trying to start out in this difficult business or who can’t afford big- ger studios. And they are usually getting a better deal than they realize. West Vancouver native Nairne, although far from ready for the boneyard at 37, is a veteran of the music scene having been a mem- ber of the Legendary Heats for about 14 years --- since they were know as Brandon Wolf, He has also been involved —- either mixing, engineering or pro- ducing — in the making of Mae Moore's Oceanview Hotel, Spirit of the West's Political, Barney Bentall’s Ain't Life Strange and Gerry Doucette’s (as yet) untitled OUR-FINES SOLID HIDE, ‘SEMI TRANSPARENT, DECK LATEX STAINS * Available in a wide rang “ULTIMA ES Oil BASED FENCE & SHINGLE STAIN (7700) * Available in Redwood, Cedurwood or Mahogany PAINTER’S CHOICE BLUE GREY LATEX FLOOR PAINT ULTIMATE VALUE -ULTIM PAl new digs buys ban album to be released this fall. The soundtrack for American Boyfriends, produced and engi- neered by Nairne, was nominated fora Genie award in 1990, While Boneyard is a private facility, newer bands soraetimes benefit from Nairae’s experience when the time is available. “Sometimes, with new bands, it means leading them by the hand through the whole process because they’ve never dane it before,” For Nairne, it means a lot of work. “You're wearing so many different hats; you've got to make sure everything, technically, is going right and that everything is sounding good, the band’s play- ing properly -—- there’s no proh- Environmenta!
