democracy’s |: hi oe ti Dear Editor: Paul St. Pierre, in his column of Nov, 12, detailed the madness which can, at times, overtake groups and even whole nations. An example of this madness, he surmised, might be Libertarians demanding millions of tax dollars to enable them to pursue their po- litical agenda. indeed this would be a form of maduess, for Libertarians look upon the taking of taxes by coer- cive means as a form of armed robbery and consequently, that those who benefit from such ac- tion are guilty of receiving stolen property. Whether we will be able to resist the temptation of such easy pick- ings when the time comes is, for the moment, purely a matter of conjecture, but it is saddening to see that Reform members who were deploring some of the prere- quisites of office are already suc- cumbing to the lure of subsidized parliamentary services. Knowing a sickness exists is halfway toward a cure, and Libertarians believe we are face to face with the malady. Whether it will overcome us before we can prevail over it, I don’: know, but given the oppor- tunity, Libertarians at least are willing to try. Democracy will only work as long as we recognize its limita- tions. Bill Tomlinson North Vancouver Job well done Dear Editor: - /A thumb up for the new footbridge over the Lynn Creek. My special gratitude to those who voted for me and a special bouquet to those who worked on my campaign and who contributed their hard-earned doliars to help me. We now have a new council and I look forward to working with them to tackle the many challenges we face. One of the immediate tasks which will be to abolish the standing committee system which has proven to be contentious, time-consuming, inefficient, con- fusing to the public and, above al, undemocratic. 1 will also pror.ote a far greater role for the neighborhood com- mittees who, I believe, can play a key role in shaping neighborhood N.
