AUTONMOTIVES Details of ICBC 1992 premium and coverage changes HERE IS a recap of the changes announced last month for ICBC’s Autoplan coverages, all effective Feb. Third party liability premiums will increase to reflect a continued rise in damage and injury claims against motorists insured by ICBC while comprehensive premiums will rise because of the startling jump in theft and vandalism claims. Collision; premiums will fall, thanks to an improved claims ex- perience for this coverage. Comprehensive and collision Premiums are based on vehicle market values which usually decline over -time. Each year, ICBC ‘‘ages” a third of B.C.’s vehicles allowing premiums to reflect these lower values. Drivers who break the faw will face a 15% hike in penalty point premiums. The 1992 Motorists’ Kit lists the new rates on page 29. ICBC. has also introduced some important changes to Autoplan coverages. ; A new ‘‘commuter’’ class will benefit those who drive less than \S kilometres one way to work or school. Many commuters in smaller communities will qualify for this rate. A new ‘‘park and ride’’ rate will apply to motorists who drive part way to work and then take public transit. Premiums for these two coverages will be lower than for the regular ‘‘to and from work or school’” use. Special notices will be included with all 1992 Autoplan renewals reminding Ken Hardie INSURANCE CORPORATION OF BRITISH COLUMBIA AUTOTOPIC motorists to check with their Autoplan agents to see if they qualify for either of these new classes. As of Feb. 1, underinsured motorist protection will be includ- ed in every B.C. motorist’s basic coverage. That means extra pro- tection if they or any member of their household are injured by a driver whose third-party coverage is not sufficient to pay their claims. The limit will be $2 million Tegardless of the third party liabil- ity coverage purchased. ICBC has increased the amount of automatic comprehensive coverage for non-manufacturer sound or other equipment added to a vehicle — up to $1,000 from the current $500. Other extra equipment will be covered up to ‘$5,000 from $1,000. Extra coverage wiil need to be purchased for sound or other equipment valued above those amounts. _ These are some of the changes that will mean extra value for motorists in the coming year. Next week, suggestions on how to keep your insurance premiums as low as possible.
