BY WINTER’S end, our nation’s

highways (and its cars) were
covered with some ten million
tons of salt.

While road salt may save

countless lives from icy accidents,
it does take its toll on autobodies,
reminds the Car Care Council of
the Automotive Industries
Association of Canada. Without
proper maintenance on a car's
protective finish, road salt can
rust fenders and corrode body
sheet metal in no time.

The only protection a car has
against corrosive environmental
conditions is its primer and paint
job. Just 7.6 litres, representing
approximately one per cent of the
total cost of the car, serve as a
barrier against rust and corrosion.

Since only exposed metal can
rust and corrode, trouble begins
when a car’s nicks and scratches
are left untouched. The Car Care
Council recommends a_ regular
maintenance routine.

Wash your car once au week
with warm water. And promptly
remove elements such as salt, bird
droppings and sap that accelerate
corrosion.

Follow with a good coating of
wax or other protective finish two
or three times a year to provide an
additional buffer between the
harsh elements and the car body.

Is it time to strut your car?

IF YOU notice your tire tread
“cupping” (which can cause a
thumping noise) and the car_ is
handling poorly. possibly giving
you a bouncy ride, you may be
ready for MacPherson struts, ad-
vises the Car Care Council of the
Automotive Industries Association
of Canada.

The MacPherson strut is not the
traditional dance of a Scottish
clan; it’s part of the suspension
system found on most of today’s
smaller cars with front drive.

Featuring a more compact
design, the strut combines, in a
single unit, the shock absorber,
the upper control arm of the
suspension and, in some cases, the
chas ssis spring.

An alternative design to the
conventional shock absorber, the
strut generally has a somewhut
longer fife expectancy. Service or
replacement, however, is a morg
expensive procedure, This is
because the strut itself is a major
component oof the suspension
system.
