BRIEFS Firefighters kept busy THE NORTH Vancouver District Fire Department was kept busy over the weekend with crews responding to everything from downed power lines to motor vehicle fires believed to be the work of arsonists. Early Sunday morning the fire depariment responded to the 1300-block of Draycott Road after a Harley Davidson motorcycle had caught on fire. A fire department spokesman said the motor- cycle was stolen from the corner of Mountain Highway and Lynn Valley Road and appears to have been wheeled to Draycott Road where it was set on fire. District firefighters responded to an earlier motor vehicle blaze on Saturday night after a Mazda pickup truck caught fire in the 2200-block of Kirkstone Road. A 2%-gallon gasotine tank was located beneath the passenger's side of the truck. The vehicle appeared to have been deliberately set on fire. A passing motorist noticed the flames and managed to extinguish it. That same night on Kirkstone Road, a newspaper vending box was set on fire. District firefighters also responded to a second motorcycle fire on Saturday in Princess Park after a 1977 Honda caught fire. A fire department spokesman said the blaze was the result of a fuel leak. A fuel teak is also being blamed for the destruction of a Volkswagen which was totally engulfed in flames on Capilano Road at 2 a.m. Saturday. That biaze is still under investigation. Firefighters responded to a bush fire in the 100-block Queens Road on Saturday. The busy weekend for the district fire department began on Friday night when a lightning storm knocked down six hydro lines in the Delbrook area, forcing fire department crews to stand by for several hours while B.C. Hydro crews repaired the downed lines. Anyone with any information regarding the arson fires is asked to contact the North Vancouver RCMP at 985-1311. Spill reporting rules introduced THE MINISTRY of Environment has introduced a new regulation requiring industry to immediately report spills of oi! and other pollutants. “Until now, there has been no specific regulation concerning reporting spills which endanger our environment,”’ John Reynolds, environment minister, said. ‘‘The spill reporting regu- lation fills a gap in B.C.’s Waste Management Act by stating clearly the type of spill which must be reported, when, and to whom.”’ Under the act, fines up to a maximum of $200,000 can be levied for failure {o report a spill. The regulation identifies different substances according to fed- eral dangerous goods legislation and the amounts of each which constitute a reportable spill.
