MAILBOx Hunter should get facts straight Dear Editor: While I defend your right to print anyone’s opinion, you have some responsibility to get the facts right. Bob Hunter’s column of April 29 is a case in point. We can agree or disagree with his “‘logic.”” We Are we losing democracy? Dear Editor: I recently received a written re- quest from Premier Gary Filion of Manitoba to prepare and rres- ent a Brief on Meech Lake tc: the Special Committee on the Pr¢:pos- ed Companion Resolution or. the Meech Lake Accord. The required fax was sent off to Ottawa but no reply wzs ever received. Several Canadians, including myself, made an appearance at the Special Committee hearing held at 9 a.m. on April 20 in the Pan - Pacific Hotel. Liberal leader Gor- don Wilson aptly described the patronage type meeting as a farce. Both Mr. Wilson and myself subsequently walked out of this meeting. TV cameras and reporters followed me out into the hallway. for an interview which appeared later on TV stations. It’s too bad that, little by little, step by step, we are losing democracy in Canada. Rass A. Martin Vancouver Sentiment a i a se vg trivialized Dear Editor: How unfortunate, that the North Shore News decided to print the letter from Judy Gandossi in the April 1 issue along with the April Fool’s Sunshine Whether by coincidence or design that decision only served to trivial- ize Mrs. Gandossi’s sentiment. Too bad it wasn’t printed in the April 29 issue. As the mother of four, two of them female, I only hope my own daughters aspire to soniething higher than appearing in their underwear in a community tabloid. Linda Shapiro ‘West Vanconver Mailbox policy WHEN SENDING a letter to the , editor, be sure to include your name, written legibly, your full ‘Girl’. - can be appalled or applaud his ar- rogance. But the News should not headline untruths such as ‘Like the once-rich Amazonian soils, the steep valiey walls of British Col- umbia mostly defy reforestation.’ Amazonian soils, like most trop- ical soils, are not rich and never were. In the tropical forest most of the nutrients are stored in the vegetation which covers the ground. That the plantations of Jari Florestal in the Amazon con- tinue to feed a mill which produces newsprint seems reasonable evi- dence of successful Amazonian reforestation. Three Brazilians were awarded the globally prestigious Wallenberg medal for excellence in forestry in 1988. Hardly a country in need of Hunt- er’s ill-informed advice. On the British Columbia coast about one million hectares have been logged or burned in the last century. Less than one per cent of that which was logged prior to 1982 is adequately forested today. Since a goodly proportion of that logging was on steep terrain it is obvious that most of the area has defied Bob Hunter and got itself reforested. Hopefully neither British Col- umbians nor Brazilians will heed Hunter’s mindless chatter, but the News should be responsible for him getting his facts straight. A.N. Brett-Davies, R.P.F.
