Vocal Jazz Festival gets under way. Vocal jazz as an ensemble form is now becoming a major part of school music programs across Canada and the U.S., due largely to the initiation of the B.C. Vocal Jazz Festival. Close to 1508 youngsters from the Pacific Northwest are brushing up on their musical skills in preparation for the two-day festi- val on March {7 and 18, including local choirs from Argyle and Windsor higa schools, and from Braemar cizrnentary. The White Cane Club meets the first Wednesday of each month from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at St. An- drew’s Church, 1044 St. Georges Ave., North Vancouver. Although it is hosted by a high school, the festival is a top-rate, high profile event. ‘It’s not just a school event. It’s a professional festival,’’ said Mary Townsend, a jazz festival spokesman. Twenty bands competed when the festival began 13 years ago, but through the work of Frank DeMiero, founder of the Frank Demiero Jazz Camp, and Carson Graham music teacher Peter Taylor, co-founder of the B.C. Vocal Jazz Festival, the festival has grown up to be a major West Coast vocal jazz competition, probably the biggest vocal jazz fes- tival in North America.
