UNIVERSITY DEVELOPMENT MARY COLLINS, Member of Parliament for Capilano, acting on behalf of External Relations Minister Monique Landry, recently. signed a $19.25 million agreement with Simon Fraser University to undertake a university development project in the Eastern Islands of Indonesia. “Simon Fraser University has developed close links with Indonesia over the past years and is ideally suited to help the Eastern Islands universities. The project will provide increased levels of high quality education for the development of the human resources of Eastern Indonesia,’ Collins said. The five-year project, funded by the Canadian In- . ternational Development Agency (CIDA), will provide _ fellowships for study in Canada, -specially-designed: DJ eal short courses, technical assistance, provision of equipment, teaching and research materials and pro- ject management support. Simon Fraser will concentrate its efforts on three universities in the narthern portions of the Eastern Islands, along with some limited assistance to five others. The project will also promote linkages between Canadian and Indonesian universities which will con- tinue after the CIDA assistance ends. - There are 10 universities in the eastern provinces of Indonesia serving a total population of nearly 24 mil- lion people. The project will include the provision of 68 graduate fellowships so that Indonesian faculty members can study in Canada. Funds will also be provided for the development of | computer, centres, libraries and laboratories.
