Retiring alderman thanks community

Dear Editor:

I would like to take this oppor-
tunity both to congratulate the
candidates and new council
members of the election just past,
and to give thanks to the many
friends and citizens of North Van-
couver City who have supported
me during elections and for four
years as alderman.

I believe that the candidates in
this election represented a diverse
cross-section of this community's
populace and interest groups.
Regardless of political ideology, all
would-be councillors brought to
the contest a commitment to ser-
vice and a sense of purpose. Con-
gratulations to all.

I am very appreciative of the
confidence shown in me by the
voters in the municipal election.

In 1987, for the average residen-
tial property, the ‘‘municipal levy’’
increased less than one per cent.
This ‘‘municipal'levy’! is the only
item in your property tax state-
ment that is under the control of
council,

This was the result of expense
control and good management of
funds such as the tax sales land
reserve, the interest from which
helps ease the tax burden. The ad-
ditional revenue from the Park and
Tilford development should be
another major factor in reducing
the ‘municipal levy’’.

With good management, this ci-
ty should be able to maintain and
improve the quality of life with

personal milestone. For all but one
of the past 13 years that J have liv-
ed and worked in the City of
North Vancouver, | have been ac-
tive in some form of community or
municipal politics. While | have
some regrets at leaving, I do so
knowing the change to be pasitive..’
