8 — Wednesday, August 26, 1987 - North Shore News Mailbox N. VAN DISTRICT MAYOR No P&T ‘high intrigue’ OPEN LETTER TO NOEL WRIGHT Tsk, Tsk, Noel! Here | was off trying to enjoy a well-earned rest and IT see you've been busily Wrighting (July 10) disparaging remarks ubout me, surmising on the ‘real’ reason for unanimous North Vancouver District Council oppo:‘tion to the proposed Park and Tilford commercial centre. You have tried to reduce -our valid concerns -— concerns shared by district and North Vancouver City staff and some members of city council -—- concerns of a number of North Vancouver resi- dents -- to a ‘‘tooth-and-nail fight’? between the city and me. I don’t know whether to laugh or to cry over such journulistic opining. This fantasy of high in- trigue involving ‘‘quiet chats’ with our former mayor and protection of ‘‘district’s commercial — self- interest’’ is totally incorrect and suggests that the proposed development of the Squamish Band lands ([R2) near the Coach House was a deep dark secret. It wasn’t. For the past number of months the band has been talking to various developers about the potential .for their lands. They have been open and cooperative by keeping us apprised of their atent and there is every reason to think this will continue. Members of city council were aware of that. The development community was cer- tainly aware, and I even made ref- erence to it at the city’s June public hearing. So the district’s views of any major commercial development, be it on Park and Fiim clips violators Dear Editor: Your article on Pauline Gray’s proposal! to police traffic violators by recording their violations on film was excellent. I sent the West Vancouver police chief a copy with some photos. | lost his reply but it was very nega- tive and said it would ¢rst too much. Pauline got a ‘‘four-bag- ger’’ right in front of his station, which may have miffed him. Except for radar, etc., our policemen still use the tactics and systems of the early '30s. Our concerns have been stated and restated in as strong a way as possible. We simply cannot ignore the impact of significant!y- increased traffic around the Se- cond Narrows bridgehead and af- fecting such intersections as Fern/Mountain, Keith/Mountain and Main Street. District council is delighted that the city council has now agreed to act with us and the Ministry of Highways in evaluating these traffic problems.
