Don Eilers, Capilano College Student Society Helene Littmann, Capilano Couner Nancy Campbell Capilano Courter LGH visitors go hungry Dear Editor: When the new Lions Gate Hospital extension was planned and built there ts a very altractive Cafetena/restaurant known as the Terrace Room which will seat probably 200 and where if is possible to obtain hot meals, cold snacks and various refreshments. But — only from Monday to Fnday for on Saturday and Sunday this potenual money maker is closed and no provision at all is made ask force needed Dear Editor: “Only God can make a tree,” to quote a familiar song. And for us in North Vancouver trees are practically sacred. We grew up with them, they are stl all around us and we can't imagine life without them. But trees like people also grow up. And sometimes they reach a size where they become a problem. In the many municipal election campaigns in which I canvassed door to door all over this Distnet, [| was literally astounded at the number of people who complained that the trees in front of ther homes had become so large that they now obstructed the view of the mountains or the water. This was especially true on the steep slopes. This, of course, depreciates the value of their property too. Having too much of a good thing may seem strange to some people. But to these people the problem was very real and they feel strongly about 11. An added problem is that trees, when they become too big, also pose a safety hazard. How then are we to reconcile this problem. We want trees and yet we don't want too many and we dont want them too high. Some people have suggested pruning and topping as the answer Hooker must keep promise Dear Editor I would hke to comment about the Hooker Chemical published in your paper recent poll on I think it would be a good idea to move Hooker nmght on the doorsteps of the 12.5 per cent of people who thought revenue was more important than safety oof perhaps te the British Properties while they make up thei minds Obviously they dont have a couple of close telatives working next door tomas bdo I don’t know all the an- swers, but I do think I know how to get at the problem. That is to set up a respon- sible body to look into the whole issue with all citizens interested or concerned being able to present their views I promised the people | canvassed I would do something about their problem. And I'm keeping my promise. I've proposed to our Distnct Council that we establish a Task Force tu jook into the question. I proposed that 1 be com- posed of members of ratepayer organizations and the District Advisory Planning Commission. After hearing from citizens in every part of our community, the task force could make recom- mendations to Council and we could take it from there, or so I thought. However, I did not get a seconder for my motion. One alderman stated thal we shoyld be cautious in denuding the North Shore of ~ > Pen es trees. That was a_ silly Statement because nobody ever mentioned such a thing. Far from it. What | did Suggest was to permit the citizens to discuss the probiem and see whether there was anything that could be done. Of course the Gift shop is open for the sale of candies, books, flowers, cigarettes and pifts, but nowhere in the building is any, provision for the visitor to obtain any refreshment at the weekend.
