Be 8 ‘or the Presentation: House office at Fight heart disease FEBRUARY IS Heart Month and starting Feb, I, thousands of vol- unteers working for the B.C. Heart Foundation will be knocking on doors throughout B.C. and the Yukon asking for donations to fight heart diseases - Canada’s number one killer. David MacDonald, president of Shoppers Drug Mart West and chairman for the 1987 Heart Fund Drive, says B.C. Heart has a solid reputation for keeping its cam- paign and administration expenses to a minimum; a fact which enables the foundation to direct a high percentage of the money it receives (86¢ of every dollar) to research and education programs designed to eliminate heart disease. Although heart and car- diovascular diseases afflict up to 50 per cent of the population and kill more people than ail other diseases combined, MacDonald Stresses that the foundation’s longstanding commitment to research is making a difference. He points out tha: since 1949 — when the B.C. Heart Foundation began its fund-raising efforts — the overall death rate from heart and blood vessel disease for people under 65 has dropped 34 per cent. He also notes that death from heart attack has dropped 25 per cent and stroke 47 per cent in the last few years alone. As campaign chairman, Mac- Donald is challenging B.C. and Yukon residents to mark February, or Heart Month, by making a per- sonal commitment to fight heart disease. He urges them to decide now what they will give when their Heart Fund canvasser calls and emphasizes that whatever people choose to donate, ‘‘a gift which goes to support heart research and education ts a gift that counts.” hat you don’t COMPLETE TUNE-UP* Includes yew Champion “Copperplus” sparkplugs, new PVC. valve, “Scope Test" ignition and carburetor adjustment and road testing. *2.6 litre & V8 engines slightly exira. Week promotes awareness of blind “THERE'S more than one way to see.”" That's the theme of this year’s national White Cane Week, February | to 7, a week of special events and demonstrations designed to increase . the public's awareness of blindness and how it affects people's lives. : ; White Cane Week is sponsored by the two major organizations for and of blind and visually impaired individuals in Canada: the Canadian National In- stitute for the Blind (CNIB) and the Canadian Council of the Blind (CCB). “This year’s theme underlines the fact that in- dividuals can function effectively — at a job, at home, in the arts — even without full sight’ says Euclid Herie, the CNIB’s managing director. “The visually impaired learn to use their other senses to compensate for lack of sight and, with the use of the innovative technical aids now available, are capable of doing much more than the general public is aware."' Gerry Braak, recently electec tauional president of the CCB, says that blind people want to be useful, contributing members of society, and that can only be achieved if the rest of society recognizes the capabili- ties of the blind. “White Cane Week is the opportunity for us to show the public what being blind is afl about. Unless people understand what we are trying to achieve — as full an integration in society (of blind people) as possible — we will never build bridges between the blind and the sighted,"" Braak said. White Cane Week activities start Sunday, Feb. 1, The 30 CNIB offices and more than 90 CCB clubs across Canada are sponsoring a variety of events, in- cluding bowling matches, dances, demonstrations of technica! aids, displays, and talks to school groups and service clubs.
