Mailbox Say hello to excess consumerism Dear Editor: Saturday, November 4, Voting Day, was a sad day for West Vancouver. A re- cord number of voters turn- ed out and the vote was 7,514 in favor of Sunday shopping and only 2,671 opposed. Two months ago, many more persons were opposed to Sunday shopping but) changed their minds because they thought all West Vancouver merchants wanted to open on Sunday. On Monday, November £8 T attended the West Van- couver Council meeting and read a letter from some West Vancouver merchants saying that their businesses would not be open, and many multi-branch businesses said their West Vancouver bran- ches were not suffering by being closed on Sundays. Following the reading of my letter, | asked the ques- tion: “Did all members of the West Vancouver Chamber of Commerce share in the cost of the Sun- day. Shoppinz Advertising Campaign equz!ly?’’ | asked for an aswer at that time, but the Mayor said I would have another opportunity to speak and that the question would be answered later. David Bakewell, Chair- man of the Chamber of Commerce, spoke in favor of the referendum saying that the Chamber of Com- merce used none of their money and it was supported by the four Merchant Associations-in West Van- couver. Where did ail the OPEN LETTER TO MINISTRY OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL I give to the Haida Nation my share of Lyell Island for their care and use. The Minister of Justice has been advised.
