THE BRITISH Columbia Lung Association’s Seawall Fitness Station, a familiar sight to exercisers on the Stanley Park Seawall, has packed up its pulse meters, weigh scales and other fitness testing equipment for another year, and has ceased operations for the winter. The Seawall Fitness Sta- tion 1s a van-type truck con- taining an assortment of fitness testing equipment, and for the past three sum- mers has helped thousands of Seawall exercisers learn about their personal fitness levels as well as providing a variety of fitness counselling services. An on-site filing system allowed Fitness Station par- ticipants to maintain per- sonal exercise logs, and a contest offering a prize of two round trip tickets to Hawaii via Air Canada Touram provided the incen- tive for exercisers to log more than £00 kilometres on their cards before Labour Day. Winner of the trip was 44 year old teacher George Ratzlaff, a regular Seawall runner. The Stanley Park Seawall has been called the busiest ex- ercise track in Canada, and a Lung Association seawall pedestrian traffic survey con- ducted over ten days in July and August confirms this by indicating that more than 500,000 walkers, runners, and cyclists passed the Seawall Fitness Station dur- ing its 94 days of operation, which began on June 2. A total of 1541 exercisers, primanly walkers and run- ners, maintained personal log cards at the Fitness Station, and tens of thousands more used the Station's fitness testing equipment without registering Or maintaining an exercise log card.
