—- C15 - Wedmesday, May 18, 1983 - North Shore News EAST OR WEST Around the world in 180 days A RECENT column on round-the-world fares caused a great deal of interest. The next question I was asked was, “How would you plan one of these long tours?” I had a few general ideas but having never tried anything so ambitious, I decided to get some airline help. Peter Buecking of Cathay Pacific and I spent a couple of hours going over the problems of routing a round- the-world expedition. Cathay P. has recently linked with CPAir to offer a similar program to the one with Pan Am. This is more convenient for Canadians since we don't have to travel to the USA to begin our Travel - wise y Barbara McCreadie journey should we decide to go East-West. The next problem with these special fares is that they are designed to go pretty much in a straight line. That means if you want to take a big jog north or south you must pay an additional fare. Por examplic, should you wish to Start from Vancouver and fly to Buenos Aires before heading for Europe it would cost’ you more than flying direct to Europe The airtincs have put together packages of simple add ons for your con vemence in planning your itincrary Several of these are concentrated in the Fars ast which ts well serviced by Cathay Pacific One shght problem with the © P © P Aas team ts that CPA doesn't fly into regular London on an scheduled basis WAIKIKI 8479 Au Only WAIKIKI *479 8 Days / Nights Au & Hotel LAS VEGAS $295 § Days, 4 Nights. So far, the round-the-world tickets aren't interchange- able with any other airline even though Cathay has several team plans in operation. If you start with the CPAir partner you can't switch to Pan Am halfway through your trip. One of the most important questions was, “Do you have to adhere to a_ strict schedule?” Fortunately, no. The basic ticket is prepared with each stop unchangeable but you may make your individual flight reservations | as you go along. As you know, every traveller likes some places better than others and it would be a disaster if you were stuck in some place you abhorred and couldn't get out until the day stated on your ticket. We agreed that the traveller would be advised to make a few hotel reser- vations in advance. After any long flight the tired traveller needs a place to lay his head with the minimum of fuss. These don’t have to be made from home but can be done in various stages along the way. It's strictly a matter of choice whether you start off East or West. Some thoughts on the subject: If you haven't done a great deal of travel, the cultural Shock will be less uf you start with Europe. Check your complete itinerary with the Health Unit and be prepared with ali the necessary shots and medication. - You may not want to carry all your funds with you for the entire trip. Consult your banker for the most convenient method of having money forwarded to you. - Give yourself plenty of time to rest and get ac- climatized before attempting . to sightsee. A number of long flights is physically demanding. - Allow a week or so to re- . cuperate on your return. A round-the-world trip may take up to 180 days to complete. If you have the money, try taking a couple of the add-on-jogs and don’t forget some of the tidy cruise packages you can pick up in exotic ports! .
