inning books ne: So Prime Minister Joe ‘(me too)’ Clark is jumping on the ‘Let’s kill the Olympics’ band- wagon. Following in puppet-like. lock step with the American peanut king and. his:running mate, Clark seems to be in favor of having the Olympic Games taken away from Moscow and moved to Montreal. That would really show those Commies who rules the world, wouldn't it? Besides, on the positive side, it would mean the Americans would be able to win many more gold medals than they have in the past because all the Communist athletes wouldn't appear. Then too, there would be a distinct possibility that the Canadians would be in a position to improve on their miniscule total of past years. Without competition, it's amazing how much better mediocrity becomes. DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY Mind you, these noble and true leaders of the free world undoubtedly feel this would be the correct step in solving the world’s problems, although we fail to un- derstand how alienation, which always creates a backlash, ever solved any problem to any degree of satisfaction. Back in 1936 there was similar concern over the Olympic Games being held that year in Berlin. Those games, so the story went, would be nothing more than a showcase to Hitler and the Nazi government. Somehow, however, common sense prevailed and in the end those 1936 Olympics are not remem- bered because of Hitler, but because of the dedication and desire and spirit of an American black-sprinter by the name of Jessee Owens who, in front of Hitler and thousands of Germans, showed what the Olympics were all about with his superb victory in both the 100 and 200 metres: over ‘the system’. A pity Carter and Clark couldn't have been there. Also a pity that the goodwill and friendship that people have for each other is so easily prostituted and abused by the political aspirations of nations. What is so frightening in this approach is not the fact that it is taken against sport, but that if sport is able to be pushed, pulled, poked and ‘prodded by the political forces - who are only temporary - then what else can be manipulated or forced to toe the line? If events carry on the way they are at present, then we can say goodbye to any hockey involving the communist nations. Mind you, this too could have its side benefits. Canada once again might enter the world cham- pionships with a hope of a t? medal. Again, with the world’s best out of it... va No more Soviet hockey - | tours? Good grief, -then whose anthem will those-red- blooded Americans in Landover, Maryland he able - to jeer as they did during the playing of the Soviet anthem last week? Of course there’s still ‘Oh Canada’ in French, in Vancouver. Once these protectors of our freedoms have managed to ruin all levels of in- ternational sport for years to come, then perhaps, in their wisdom they will appoint managers and owners of the some of the National Hockey League teams to their cabinets. Can't you see it? Harold Ballard, Punch Imlach and Joe Clark? Boggles the mind doesn't it? : The sad thing about all this is that the politicians seem to be serious. And to what end? Athletic are games per- formed for and by children and adults. dss the ‘children’ are taking over. Wouldn't it be better to run against a Russian rather than fight him to the death? Carried to its extreme, “if politicians can dictate who we may run or jump with, then will their next step be to place a ban on the reading of all books by communists... or Soviets... or atheists... or...? , Think about it.
