Dear Editor:

in response to Noel Wright's
column of July 25 (“Why do we
let the taxman do our donating?"'),
perhaps the answer to Wright's
question is ‘‘Because we don’t do
it ourselves."*

Canadians (and particularly
British Columbians) don’t have a
great track record when it comes
to charitable donations and vol-
unteer participation.

In Wright's article, he asks a
number of pertinent questions
relevant to the community grants
recently approved by West Van-
couver council,

There are a few really good col-
umnists in the United States; Pat
Buchanan, Joe Sobran; Evans and
Novak are very conservative and
straightforward.

1 don’t know the Canadian
press as well, but I have read col-
umns by Doug Collins and I am
impressed with his dedication to
the truth, and his refusal to
knuckle down under pressure.

It would seem that the dervishes
of thought control -have decided

that Collins .should not only be
fired, but charged with some Sort
of hate crime as well.

Now I realize that there is no
First Amendment in Canada. But
‘there is a Charter of Rights, which
as I understand it says that a man
may.express his opinions.

Obviously, Collins is expressing
-his opinions. The question is, are
“the ‘opinions he expresses so

+ beyond the pale that he should not

‘. be permitted to express them?

That is very subjective. ;

_. | agree with most of his opii-
nions. Consequently, | think Col-
lins’ salary should be raised...

The. dervishes do not like his
opinions. They want him jailed.

Raising Collins’ salary isn’t go-
ing to hurt Canadian society.

society beyond repair.

there are times of shrinking
budgets for all levels of govern-
ment.

That is one of the most pressing
reasons why municipal councils
must continue to fund these ser-
vices.

We, as citizens, are used to pro-
vidng for those in our community
who are less fortunate then
ourselves through our taxes, both
municipal! and provincial.

That, Mr. Wright is how we do
our donating, for the most part.

It may not be a fulsome answer
but Iithink it strikes to the heart
of your question, since you were,
after all, ‘‘just asking.”
