= MAIL Box- Hospital team was ‘superb’ Dear Editor: Two weeks ago [made an S00-kilometre journey trom my home in Prince George to have neurosurgery at Lions Gate Hospital. While [was anxious to get the surgery over with, T did net look forward to being away from home ard familiar sur- roundings. My fears, however, were put to rest the moment | stepped toot in the hospital. The treatment I received at Liens Gate was superb. Not onty did hospital staff treat me with care and compassion, but also they extended it to my family. My family and I want to publicly extend our thanks to every- one involved in my care (pre-op, surgical team lead by Dr. Padilla, recovery, special care and neurosurgery ward, occupa- tional and physiotherapists, porters, housekeeping). } will always remember the smiles, the kind words, and the encouragement 1 was extended. [1 is an everyday occurrence to hear about our failing health- care system. EP have been caught up in the “mess” for over 18 months and know full well the physical and psychological dam- age the system creates. [tis most important to realize that the problems lie “in the system” and not with the hard-working people trying to work within its contines. | understand the stress our health-care workers are under but vou would never sense it in their day-to-day dealings with patients and their families. Your community is lucky to have such dedicated people work- ing for vour heaith and well beiag. Sylvia Vandal Prince George, vandal@telus.net Float a toil bridge to link Sunshine Coast Dear Editor: May this short letter light the fires of “one for all and ail for one” spirit, regard- ing the expansion of the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal. Thirty million dollars will buy a lot of noise and traffic, and most of it in the summer and on long weekends. Some voices are whispering about a Why not invest — as a private project — in a toll-floating bridge to the Sunshine Coast with the $30 million as a primer? The “Coast” needs an infusion, easy access to start industry, businesses and housing. And the ferry people are talking about pushing a reservation system, which would limit our freedom to come and go more parking, space — free of charge. I realize there is a need for shipping to the ovo pulp and paper mills and [am pos- itive this is only a small problem, also the location of the bridge — well, I have my idea, but leave it to a survey. [four up-and- coming engineers can dangle a Volkswagen from the Lions Gate Bridge, there should “fixed link” bridge and/or tunnel to — even more. Vancouver Island, a mammoth project of work and money and time. FRIDAY, AUGUST 11 STARTS 10am SHARP By building a toll bridge, there would be room for one more Nanaimo ferry and not be anything, to worry about. Poul B. Sorensen Sechelt, B.C. ALL IN-STORE STOE 5 2st ‘SATURDAY, AUGUST 12 STARTS 10am SHARP Friday, August 11, 2000 — North Shore News - 9 Citizens, unions could pay for ship Dear Editor: For Whom the Bell Tolls. Councillor Bill Bell's “tintinabu- lations” over the federal funding for the “ascend” of a scrapped Victory ship are tvpical of the gimme-gimme mob of the social- ist Jefi everywhere. Likewise are his politicking potshorts at the most straightforward honest MP, Mr. Ted White, P have had the pleasure of observing. If Mr. Bell wants to test the support for his sentimental cause, 3 fund-raising appeal to the good citizens of his munici- pality, coupled with hefty donations from the coffers of his well- heeled union backers seems logical. OF course all unionists themselves may well reach into their well-filled pockets also. Then Coun. Bell might call for tunds from those experts in derelict shipping in Victoria, who have shown such willingness to throw taxpayers cash at every ratbag scheme bobbing up from the loony left. If'so it would confirm the explanation of some “cultural differences.” Aussies believe you should look after your mates. Brits believe you should look after those people who belong to your club. Yanks believe that people should look out for and take care of themselves. Canadians believe that that’s the govern- ment’s job, New Zealanders seem to think that none of this matters after several beers. Cheers and Good on Ya, Ted. (Ding Dong — Closing Time).
