Young Kids, road don't mix More than 26,000 Canadian children are injured or killed in road-related inciderts every year, and a recent- ly released survey goes some way to explaining why. The Safe Kids Canada sur- vey shows adults may be putting their kids at risk with- out realizing it for almost half of these incidents. “Safe Kids Canada urges parents and other caregivers to understand the importance: of the age nine,” says Judy irwin, the crganization’s director of communications. “Medical and deveiopmen- tal research shows that undi . children are nine years of age, they are not capable of makin imporrant decisions about wake ic.” The poll found that about 45% of parents said they would allow their children under the age of nine te go for walks that invoive crossing the street, or going for a bike ride (44%) without adult supervision. However, child devclop- ment experts say aot all chil- dren may have the level of thinking and physical coordina- tion to walk across the read or ride their bicycles safely. “Children under nine may not be able to judge whether a situation is safe, or react appro- pnately in an emergency — cspecially when they are ner- vous or scared,” says Irwin. “A parent may think ‘My child is smart. He can repeat na 7. 30:DAY POWERTRAIN. GUARANTE! the rules of the road and is responsible,’ “These things may be true, but developmentally a child under nine is not ready.” For cxample: @ Children under the age of nine can’t see out of the cor- ners of their cycs as well as adults can. They aten’t able to use information from their pen heral vis’on. he direction of various sounds (e.g. a siren) is often difficult for children co deter- mine. They may turn the wrong way searching for a sound. & Children’s sense of vercep- tion is differers than that of adults. They may think large cars move more quickly than small cars, or narrow streets are tess dangerous than wider oncs. @ Children lack a sense of vul- nerability. They don’t under- stand a car can seriously hurt or kill them if they collide The survey also showed that around 65% of parents said they are “very confident” that their car seats are used proper- ly. “This concerns us a great deal,” says Irwin. Studies show fewer than 20% of children’s Car seats are used correctly. The survey also showed more than one-third of ts (37%) do not require under 12 years of age to sit in the cat’s back seat. The back seat is the safest areaofthe car for children. - : Also, only 6£% of parents’ use booster seats once kids out- grow their car seats. Booster _ seats are needed until kids weigh 60 Ibs.
