30 — Wednesday, November 12, 1997 — North Shore News : Is : Bridge users to be asked their opinion NORTH Vancouver Chamber of Commerce volunteers will be out in force at Lions Gate Bridge on Wednesday morning. They'll be asking morn- ing rush-hour motorists this question: “Are you in favor or not in favor of having tolls on the future Lions Gate Bridge?” . ‘.. The provincial govern- ment asked the same ques- tion in a survey conducted in September. In 762 inter- views, 49.4% favored tolls, 35% were not in favor of tolls and 15.6%" didn’t: know or refused to - respond. According to. chamber chaiz- maa _ Doug Smith of the 762 -. interviews conducted, just 39. of the respondents were from the North Shore, 144 were from Vancouver and the rest from elsewhere. Said Smith, “We feel that it is important to know how our own residents and busi- nesses feel about tolls and pass that information on to the government. “We will be asking exactly the same question of exactly the same number of respon- dents so our results will clearly be useful to the min- ister. “We believe the govern- ment has not gone far enough in finding out what the public wants on this issue and’ decisions based’ on a province-wide omnibus sur- vey just don’t make sense,” he added. _ Members of the cham- ber’s Transportation Task Force will be handing out postage-paid post cards at the entrances to Lions Gate Bridge starting at 7:45 a.m. on Noy. 12. The results of . the survey will be released as soon as 762 bridge users have responded.
