22 — Sunday, October 26, 1997 ~ North Shore News Halloween beckons By Layne Christensen News Reporter la ews.com TRICK-or-treaters will not be alone on the streets this Halloween. Community organizations are working together to help make Oct. 31 a safe night out for children and a worry-free one for parents. Unintentional injuries are a leading cause of hospital- ization among children and youth during Halloween, according to Isabella Losinger, manager of health pro- motion services for the Lower Mainland Red Cross. Losinger recommends parents give their child's cos- tume a quick safety review before trick-or-treaters take to the streets next Friday evening. Important safery considerations: W keep costumes short to minimize the risk of tripping; @ use makeup instead of masks, which can fimit the child’s visibility; B layer waterproof clothing under a costume to help children stay warm and dry; and B apply reflective materials to make children more visible in the darkness. Terry Abrams of the District of North Vancouver Fire Services adds the following safety notes: M avoid costumes with long trailing pieces chat may eas- ily ignite; Bi inform children to stay clear of open flames and other heat sources; and wif clothing does catch on fire, ensure your child knows to stop, drop and roll to extinguish the flames. District of North Vancouver firefighters will again volunteer their time this Halloween to present three public fireworks displays. The shows take place at 8 . p.m. at Norgate, Lynn Vailey and Myrtle parks. This year’s pyrotechnics should be bigger and better than in years past, said Abrams. The municipality has allocated an additional $4,000 for the (lsplays, to bring the toral cost to a proximately $10,000. Abrams said the fire department continues its long- standing tradition of the public display because it is a safe alternative to the hazards of backyard fireworks. “Every year we have kids ar Lions Gate Hospital with fingers burnt,” he said. Firecrackers are prohibited from sae a use in all three North Shore municipalities. Bob Beaudoin of the RCMP’s North Van detsthment ion a final caution to motorists: the streets are getting slippery, so expect longer braking distances, and remember that pedestrians have the right of way at an intersection.
