it WEDNESDAY February 19, 1997 Aatyedtijyy | Eddie Bauer Edition + Liberal budget debated Reformer critical of ‘interventionist’ Grits 6y jan Noble News Reporter WEST Vancouver-Sunshine Coast MP Herb Grubel used Tuesday’s budget to try to draw clear distinctions in Liberal and Reform policy in the run-up to an anticipated federal election. Even though he won’r be running for re- election in the newly created riding, the for- mer Reform finance critic took the Liberals to task for returning to what he called their old interventionist ways. He pointed to job-creason measures included in Tuesday’s budget. By definition, job creation means a job that wouldn’t oth- erwise exist, Grubel said. “Once the money stops the jobs are gone. If there is no demand for it, it shouldn’t be done.” Reform, he said, would take the same money going to job creation and instead of nding it, give it back to Canadians in the form of a tax break to create what he called “genuine employment.” Phil Boname, an urban economist run- ning for the Liberal nomination in Grubel’s riding, said the Liberals won't be handing out tax breaks and “buying votes” like the Reform party: “The Liberals are going to stay the course until we've got a balanced budget.” See Liberal page3 NEWS photo Mike Wakefield Sound spectacular VIOUNIST Aileen Doetsch is surrounded by some of the top brass at Handsworth. Last Monday, councillors voted unani- mously to grant early budget approval for the purchase of a portable wuck scale. “It (pur- chasing the scale) serves es. 3 well to say {DIStrict Council that... we concern our- selves with what happened on 22nd,” said Coun. Bill Soprovich during council's short discussion of the matter. Last Sept. 27, a runaway dump truck’s brakes failed causing the overloaded vehicle to career down 22nd Suet and kill a pedestrian before coming to a stop on its side on the south side of Marine Drive. A year prior to the horrific accident, a West Vancouver staff report had called for a temporary ban of trucks travelling dov'n- hill on 15th, 21se and 22nd streets between the highway and Fulton Avenue for a six- month tial period. But council rejected the suggestion at an in-camera meeting. Soprovich added that West Vancouver wants to serve notice to truckers who don’t pay proper attention to their load limits or brake maintenance schedules. “The word will soon spread that we'll take you to task for that,” said Soprovich. The municipality’s new portable com- mercial truck scale costs abour $9,000. Coun. Allan Williams said West Vancouver has been waiting for provincial authorities to act, but no action seems to be forthcoming. He said the portable scale can be put in the vicinity of construction sites to monitor truckers better. “We trust the micssage will get out to the trucker community,” said Williams. ost passport puzzle By Anna Marie D'Angelo News Reporter WHY do so many Iranians living on the North Shore lose their passports?
