8 ~ Sunday, Apri! 16, 1995 — North Shore News ruttie acim EE , rye dice Teen stereotype Dear Editor: In the March 22 North Shove News, the article “Cap Mall extend- ed hours find support™ quotes Lugaro Jewellers’ manager Tawny Jellis as saying, “In a jewelry store you can't have high school kids handling mer- chandise worth more than their car." By this statement she implies that she must pay her older and more mature employces higher wages than those paid by fast-food restaurants or coffee bars, which are “traditional” teenage jobs. She also. seems to feel. that teenagers are irresponsible, unreli- able and untrustworthy, belittling _ their accomplishments such as buy- ing a car and landing their first job. This is Jellis' reasoning as to why extended mall hours are detrimental to her business, But in my humble teenage opin- ion, Jellis’ attitude is what is harming Lugaro Jewelers, She has offended me and many of my friends and acquaintances by her L crass and tactless statement. [am 18 years old und work ata catfee bar where | handle machinery more expensive than the cost of my car, and enjoy a position of responsi- bility. [have been a member of the work force since the age of 14, and have an excellent record in my work and vol- unteer experiences. skewered fant not alone in these respects, the majority of teenagers today are also just as responsible, just as trust- worthy, and just as reliable as Tam. ellis, however, promotes the stereotype in our society that teens are lazy and only fit for menial and mentally unchallenging jobs.
