John Hammond (Richard Atten-
borough with a weak Scottish ac-
cent) and his team of genetic
engineers have turned a tropical
island into a land of the giants.
For reasons known only to
Hammond (and the scriptwriters),
not only have harmless herbivores
like triceratops and brachiosaurs
been recreated, but so have the
show-stopping tyrannosaurus rex
and his smaller, but more cunning
relative, the velociraptor.

The whole park is controlled by
a temperamental computer and
some unreassuring wire fences.
Can a system crash be far away?
Well, why else would we be here,
right?

Laura Dern and Sam Neill
headline as paleontologists
(dinosaur diggers) who get the
aerobic workout of their lives
eluding their skeletal-specimens-
made-flesh.

Their fellow dino-dodgers i in-
clude a nervous insurance rep
{Martin Ferrero) and mathemati-
cian Jan Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum)
who acts as the filrn’s conscience
when he wryly comments, “God
help us, we're in the hands of
engineers.’

And of course, it wouldn't be a
 Speilberg film without a couple of
kids. Joseph Mazzello and Airana
Richards perform to the high
standards set by previous
Speilberg kinder — natural, in-
telligent and terrific at looking
petrified.

But the real stars are the
dinosaurs, brought to life through
computer wizardry and a team of
puppeteers. An impressive new
digital sound system boosts the
realism even more with various
grunts, thunderous roars and a
perfect Speiibergian scene —- the
whale-like “singing” of the
beasts.

Speilberg is a tad light on charac-
ter, but heavy on action, tension-
breaking comedy and fascinating
special effects.

Jennifer Haines (Rebecca
DeMornay) is the Windy City
lawyer who defends “charming”
womanizer David Greenhill (Don
Johnson) on a murder rap.

“| can make any woman do
whatever I want,’’ he says candid-
ly. (Anything? Gee,Don, could you
pet Melanie Griffith to take acting
lessons?)

Is David’s late wife (who was
thrown from an 18th-storey win-
dow) just the latest corpse in a line
of ex-lovers? Will Jennifer fall for
dandy Dave or fall out of a win-
dow, too?

Whatever — you won't care
what happens to whom as this
lame drama drags on tu its in-
evitable end.

If you think throwing 38 away is
a sin, then this movie is as guilty as
its title.
