Squamish to receive flood study funds THE DISTRICT oft Squamish will receive $57,500 towards the devel- opment of a flood hazard Management plan, En- vironment, Lands. and Parks Minister. John Cashore recently announc- ed. The funds will be used for a ‘'study focusing on measures that can be taken to manage the flood hazard in the Squamish area. Those measures may include land-use zoning, flood-proofing, flood . warning systems and other regulatory initiatives. “About 75% of the population -of the District of Squamish live in areas that have significant poten- tial for flooding,’’ said Cashore. . “An overall management plan is needed. to clearly identify the hazards, improve public awareness of. the flood risks and .define the steps that should be taken to al- leviate those risks.”* The study will be done in three phases, with comprehensive public - consultations carried out at ap- propriate .stages. throughout the process, added Cashore. Phase one will provide “background information, flood hazard maps and flood protection works. The second phase will cover land use implications and policy and regulatory responses that, said Cashore, will balance the objec- tives of public safety, flood dam- age reduction, natural resource protection and community devel- opment. Phase three will develop the flood hazard management plan ‘and implementation program, along with policy and regulatory documents and public information materials. . The provincial contribution rep- resents 75% of the study's antici- pated $130,000 cost. The project is expected to be completed by March 31, 1994.
