The program has a database of close to 400 participating businesses. “The West Vancouver school district has had to res- pond to the challenge of creating career education pro- grams that will assist the stu- dents to meet the demands of a technologically accelerated future,” the program’s in- troduction says. “No longer can traditional forecasts and traditional career options be the foundation for career development pro- grams.” Career developmeni is a way of integrating classroom theory with practical experience in the workplace through individu- alized learning agreements. According to District 45's coordinator of career devel- opment, Barbara Hunter, the partnership between education and business is mutually beneficial, with studeris being By Kevin Gillies the big winners. “The partnership comes by us working with them to get some of their time and exper- tise. Partnership from their perspective comes from the fact that they’re helping the educational system which eventually helps their future ernployees and their whole community and business area.” Students get help deciding what careers they may find interesting, while businesses get to train the next generation of employees. The student is given the op- portunity to learn the demands and responsibilities of employment, while the employer receives an effective way to involve business in educational policy and cur- ricula. “They (the businesses) help give kids an idea of what ca- reers are like and help develop some of those attitudes and PACIFIC MARINE TRAINING INSTITUTE skills that are pretty generic — that help kids no matter what they decide to do,” Hunter said. “They can be a part of de- veloping a good work ethic and attitude, then they feel they've done their share of helping educate young people as well. The program involves an in- school component and an out-of-school component. During the out-of-school placements, the students will also be expected to attend weekly integration sessions that are coordinated by the career development teacher.
